The passage

Ten days from the top of the Adriatic to Athens

The owner needed his Oceanis 40 moved from Koper at the top of the Adriatic to Lavrio near Athens, and he needed it quickly: about ten days, before a fixed date in early August. Summer in the Adriatic and the Ionian is usually kind, so the plan was a direct one, the line you see on the passage plan: down the Croatian coast and straight on down the Adriatic to Corfu and into Greek waters.

From Corfu the route went Lefkada, Patras and into the Gulf of Corinth, then through the Corinth Canal, which saves the long way round the Peloponnese, and on to Lavrio. Good weather and favourable winds most of the time. When the wind died the crew motored to keep the average speed up, because the date mattered more than a purist's log book. The boat arrived on time and without a scratch.

The Corinth Canal or the long way round?

The Corinth Canal is expensive, and it was not cheap even then. For a 40 footer the toll is a real line in the budget. The other option is the long way round the Peloponnese, which costs days instead of money. We ask every owner on this route which they prefer. Here the deadline decided it: the owner chose the canal and had his boat in Lavrio on time.
